Broken swords

If swords are phallic symbols, then what to make of the recurrent "sword that was broken but now has been reforged at last" motif so common in epic fantasy novels? Consider for example the sword Narsil in LOTR.

My take is that the motif is really a metaphor for the overcoming of a long period of sexual impotence, maybe with the help of the elven alchemist Viagh'Grah.
