"Glassy-eyed zest"

This blog post comments on a felicitous turn of phrase by Jack Vance: "spasm of zeal".

For my part, I want to mention another one I like very much: "glassy-eyed zest". It appears in the first chapter of The Green Pearl (freely avaliable here in PDF form for you to sample, dear reader.)

The expression is used in the context of some erotic exertions on the part of one of the characters, performed with a certain lack of genuine enthusiasm.
